DURING THE 1976 SEASON, GEORGE BRETT won his first American League batting title and made his first Baseball Digest cover appearance in the March issue.
During the '76 campaign, Brett led the A.L. in hitting (.333), at-bats (645), hits (215) and triples (14).
Brett was considered one of the toughest hitters in the American League during the 1970s and 1980s. He is the only player in history to win a league batting championship in three different decades when he won the A.L. crown in 1976, 1980 and 1990.
His 1980 MVP season and his post-season performances defined his greatness as a hitter. In 1980, Brett hit .390 with a .664 slugging percentage and 118 RBI in only 117 games.
He led the Kansas City Royals to six division titles, two pennants and one World Series by hitting a combined .337 with 10 homers and 23 RBI in 43 post-season games.
