This summer, consider something new: some well-made, affordable, user-friendly American wines from riesling grapes. They have just enough residual sugar to make them some of the most accessible wines on today's market. I've never met anyone who doesn't like them.
Riesling is the principal grape used in the great German and Alsatian whites. Wines made from the same grapes in this country are softer and somewhat sweeter, but there are some quality vintners producing relatively "dry" rieslings that deserve our attention.
Favorites include Bonny Doon Pacific Rim Dry Riesling, Geyser Peak Russian River Valley Dry Riesling and Trefethen Estate Dry Riesling from California and Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Dry Riesling and Washington Hills Columbia Valley Dry Riesling from the state of Washington.
SERVE WITH: "Dry" California riesling is a perfect summertime sipping wine. It can also complement spicy Asian cuisine, tuna salad and grilled white fish.
