KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ All even. Or, perhaps more accurately, dead even.
That's the status of the Kansas City Royals, who slipped to the .500 mark for the first time this season by losing 6-4 on Sunday to the Oakland Athletics.
The fall to .500 came as the Royals reached the one-third pole of their season. They are 27-27 after 54 of their 162 games.
On one hand, that's probably much better than most folks expected when the 100-loss club of 2002 began this season. On the other, the Royals' slide is a real downer after fans got so giddy following their unexpected jetaway.
"I think the past is the past and we expect to be a lot better than .500," team captain Mike Sweeney said. "We've got some quality guys on this team and we just haven't been getting the job done lately."
"But we've got another two-thirds of the season to play it out and we know we're a lot better than what we've shown. It's our time."
