BALTIMORE _ Much was swirling in the stiff winds Sunday at blustery Camden Yards. And if you looked closely enough, you might even have seen the Rangers' last scant hopes blown away along with the discarded hot dog wrappers and peanut bags.
If the Rangers weren't buried here this weekend, it's clear that the shovels at least are out. After coughing up two leads Sunday before losing to the Baltimore Orioles, 5-4, the Rangers slid a season-worst 12 games behind AL West-leading Seattle. Since cobbling together their seven-game winning streak, the Rangers (25-30) have lost six of their last eight.
Their longest road trip of the season is off to a 2-4 start, and the really tough part of it is still to come. After splitting two games in Tampa Bay and losing three of four in Baltimore, the Rangers next play six interleague road games against Atlanta and Montreal, teams that have two of the three best records in the National League.
"It's already bad," Rangers pitcher Ismael Valdes said of the road trip. "We don't want to make it any worse."
Whatever confidence was spawned by the recent winning streak evaporated in the Maryland winds. After an 8-4 victory in Thursday's series opener, the Rangers were outscored 20-6 while losing the last three games. Texas hitters were 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position in those games.
"That's the thing we have to get better at," Rangers manager Buck Showalter said.
