CLEVELAND _ Over the past few seasons, it has been an axiom of American League baseball that the way to beat the Chicago White Sox is to keep hitting the ball at their defenders.
That's how the Indians rallied for a 5-4, 10-inning win Sunday at Jacobs Field.
Jody Gerut came to the plate with runners on second and third and two outs in the final inning and cracked his bat on Billy Koch's 0-and-1 slider.
The looping flair initially looked as if it would easily carry over the head of Jose Valentin, but the shortstop closed quickly. The ball struck his glove. For an instant, it appeared the game would proceed to the 11th inning, but no, the ball dropped to the grass, and Omar Vizquel dashed across the plate with the game-winner.
"It was do or die," Valentin said. "I got a glove on it. I don't know where it hit me. That's how things go around here. I didn't make the catch."
Chicago Manager Jerry Manuel thought the ball bounced off the heel of Valentin's glove.
