DENVER _ At the time, Brian Griese called it "kind of embarrassing."
Not his two interceptions in the first quarter against Oakland last December, in a game he called the biggest regular-season contest of his career "without a doubt, by far."
Not his ankle injury last September, which he attributed to tripping over his golden retriever.
Griese was referring to his new contract _ a six-year, $39 million deal that included a $12.6million signing bonus, the largest in Denver Broncos history.
That was April 11, 2001. On that day, owner Pat Bowlen declared that Griese was "the quarterback of the future for the Denver Broncos."
If Griese was embarrassed over the deal, imagine how the Broncos front office feels now. Two years and less than two months later, the Broncos will release Griese.
