ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. _ When the first casino opened here 25 years ago in May, a dollar was the highest denomination of token for slot machines to swallow.
Today the costliest coin is $500. This summer, players will be able to thumb $1,000 tokens into some slots _ and lose all $1,000 in one pull.
It's a novelty, industry observers acknowledge. But the notion of high rollers walking around with $1,000 coins clinking in their pockets shows how far slots have come in the industry.
That wager in certain slots at the new Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa would be more than many people's weekly paychecks. The $1,000 coin is new to Atlantic City but is offered on a limited basis in Las Vegas.
"There will be some players that will love to give this machine a shot," said Paul Tjoumakaris, vice president of slot operations at the Borgata. "It's an exciting machine."
Among the 3,640 slots, two machines will offer $1,000 denominations, two will offer $500 denominations, 10 machines will be $100 denominations and 16 machines $25 denominations.
