May 29--Nonprofits -- our latest economic engine.
That's the message the state's charitable organizations want to get out, following the release yesterday of the first-known study on the economic impact of the nonprofit sector.
Not only has the number of hospitals, charitable organizations and colleges grown to be far larger than many had expected, employing more than 59,300 people in 2000, they also paid almost $1.8 billion in wages.
