May 28--Three of the state's highest lawmakers in Washington on Tuesday said they are seeking $250 million in federal funds toward preserving open space in the development-pressured Highlands.

Democratic Sens. Jon S. Corzine and Frank R. Lautenberg teamed up with Republican Rep. Rodney P. Frelinghuysen to announce new legislation at a symbolic launch pad: a hawk watch platform atop Wildcat Ridge in Rockaway Township, a craggy wildlife sanctuary saved from housing development a few years ago by a state Green Acres buyout.
