ORLANDO, FLA. - Laparoscopic removal of a large uterus can be safely accomplished if the uterus is electrically morcellated, Dr. Marlan Schwartz reported at the annual meeting of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
Patients who undergo this procedure have fewer complications and return to work and normal activities more quickly than do those who undergo alternative hysterectomy procedures, said Dr. Schwartz of Somerset Medical Center, Somerville, NJ.
Of 75 patients with uteri between 220 g and 1,110 g who required a hysterectomy for severe pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, or menorrhagia, 65 underwent laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy aided by electric morcellation of the uterus.
