An oral antiviral for preventing influenza A and B in adults and children 13 years and older. Previously approved for treating tancomplicated influenza. The first neuraminidase inhibitor for flu prevention.
* Dosage: 75 mg once a day for at least 7 days, beginning within 2 days of exposure to an infected contact. 75 mg once a day during a community outbreak.
* Special Considerations: Side effects when taken for prevention were similar to those in patients who took the drug for treatment; the most common in prevention studies were nausea, vomiting, headache, and fatigue. Efficacy for preventing influenza has not been established in immunocompromised patients. Not a substitute for the annual flu vaccine.
