The maintenance of weight loss requires the long-term treatment of obesity. Unfortunately most physicians stop treating obesity once patients have reached their weight loss goals. The result is that the patients gain back the weight they lost and then some.

"Achieving, and maintaining, a healthy weight is a lifelong challenge," Dr. Susan Z. Yanovski said at an obesity symposium sponsored by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians in Washington.

"The drugs we used were approved for short-term use, no longer than 12 weeks. It's accepted now that if you use weight loss medications, it's for the long term," said Dr. Yanovski of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Bethesda, Md.
