I know many physicians, but few seem really happy. I'm no philosopher, but 2 decades of practice have taught me a thing or two about the meaning of life. Here are some pearls that have helped me enormously. Happy New Year!
* Play the dying game.
As physicians, we are forced to deal with death and dying more than most people. But we seldom stop to think about the fact that we ourselves won't be around forever.
Here's a morbid little trick that may help you to put things in perspective. It may seem like a silly game, but it has helped me to truly appreciate the value of life.
Pretend you have just seen your friend the oncologist and, regrettably you have been informed that you have less than 1 year to live. Sit down in a quiet place and really ponder this for a while. Would you make any changes in your life?
I played this game myself a year ago and immediately cut back my office hours. It was the best move I ever made. My income dropped, but I don't care. No one's dying words have ever been, "I only wish I had worked a few more hours at the office."
* Take some "window time"
