May 24--Metallic Power, a Carlsbad company that developed an alternative energy technology using fuel cells, seems to have ended its peripatetic search for a potential customer.

The eight-year-old startup said last week it has formed a partnership with a U.S. subsidiary of Britain's Marconi Corp. to provide backup power units for wireless base stations, among other things.

The backup power unit, roughly as big as a side-by-side washer and dryer, uses Metallic Power's zinc fuel cell technology, which electricity from a chemical reaction involving zinc pellets …
