May 23--The first time Kathy Hogan Trocheck's father saw her Avondale Estates bungalow, he shook his head and asked the mystery writer if she and husband Tom knew what they were getting into.

"When we bought it, you couldn't see the front of the house it was so overgrown," Trocheck said. "We spent the first three years clearing the yard."

Trocheck is a former Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter who has penned 14 books, mostly mysteries. Her most recent, "Savannah Blues," was published under a pen name (Mary Kay Andrews) in 2002 and nominated earlier this year for the prestigious Edgar award for mystery writing. Her …
