May 22--New research on weight loss suggests that low-carbohydrate regimes like the Atkins diet may help shed pounds faster in the short term than conventional diets while improving some risk factors for heart disease.
Two small studies published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine produced findings contrary to decades of dietary messages that a reduced-fat eating plan high in carbohydrates was best for losing pounds and maintaining a healthy weight. In both studies, those following a low-carb diet lost more weight in the first six months and showed more improvement in cholesterol levels than those on the kind of low-fat, high-carb diet supported by volumes of research.
Since the Atkins diet was introduced in 1972, the medical community has largely dismissed it as a fad -- criticizing its endorsement of foods high in saturated fats such as steak and butter, while prohibiting pasta, starchy vegetables and even some fruits.
