May 17--A controversial asphalt plant would be built in an industrial area in north Charlotte instead of a center city neighborhood under a plan described by city leaders Friday.

The new 10-acre site, off the I-85 Service Road near Statesville Avenue, is a half-mile from the nearest homes and shielded from them by a buffer of trees, city officials said.

Another plus: Ferebee Corp., the company building the plant, likes the site, said Charlotte City Council member James Mitchell, who has been working with the company.
