May 17--Newspaper offices across the nation were a-twitter last week over the story of Jayson Blair, the New York Times reporter fired for inventing or stealing most of his sources, quotes and stories over the past five years.
Reporters and editors everywhere were incredulous/horrified/agog that the worst sin of journalism had been committed at the highest level of newspapers.
One suspects the story was not quite as gripping to the public. Half of newspaper readers think we make up the news anyway.
