May 17--Five conventions have already been confirmed for Hampton, Va.'s, new convention center, city officials said Friday at a groundbreaking for the $106 million facility and the adjacent Embassy Suites hotel.
"We're just awaiting the final contracts," Hampton Major Mamie Locke told a crowd of 550 people Friday attending the ceremony.
Locke said the five conventions represented 10,750 room nights, 32,600 delegates, providing $4.4 million in economic impact to Hampton.
"Many new convention centers break ground with no conventions lined up at all," she said.
