May 17--The Detroit Medical Center is hiring an outside consultant to evaluate plans for closing hospitals and curtailing services if the health system does not get immediate public funding.
But Dr. Arthur Porter, chief executive of the health system, said the consultants are not being hired to prepare the city's largest employer for bankruptcy.
