``Learning From the Links,'' by David K. Hurst (The Free Press, $25)
Can you really apply the principles of golf to business?
David K. Hurst says you can, and he's written a book showing that golf is much more than weekend foursomes and watching Tiger Woods win most weeks.
Hurst, a business executive and avid golfer, says there is a pure connection between golf and business. Expert golfers and managers are "designers and makers of their worlds, not manipulators."
The book has 18 chapters, each with its own "par" and "distance." The author says there's a direct correlation between low golf handicaps and success in business, pointing out the low handicaps of both Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems Inc. and former General Electric Co. chief executive Jack Welch.
Readers might expect a light-hearted feel, but ``Learning From the Links'' is almost scholarly in its theories and advice. Readers will need to bear down to get the most from Hurst's assertions.
