Q. My snow peas and Sugar Snap peas produced early and in great abundance but seem to be done for the season. I now have two rows available in my vegetable garden. What can be planted in their place at this time of the year?
A. For such a timely question, you get extra credit and move to the head of this column. Though it's still hot, gardeners may take tentative steps toward the third act of this drama we call vegetable gardening. As August arrives, seeds and seedlings of great fall crops such as leaf lettuce, spinach broccoli and cabbage show up in garden centers.
