WIXOM, Mich. _ Dale Nelmark's neighbors were convinced he was cheating.
His lawn was so lush and so thick and so very green, they just knew he was ignoring the city's stringent watering restrictions.
But Nelmark, a 59-year-old retired construction worker, insists that he hasn't been disregarding the every-other-day order.
"I don't need to ignore it," he says. "I don't need to water that often."
Most of us have spent the summer fighting a largely losing battle with a rain-stingy Mother Nature. And when we are permitted to water lawns by the regional Water Use Task Force _ mandatory restrictions are still in force _ we tend to soak the grass for hours.
Not Nelmark. His lawn gets just 18 minutes of watering. Even before the rains earlier this week, he watered just 24 minutes.
"And that's every other day," he brags.
