OAKLAND _ The calendar turned to August on Thursday, and if it marked a new beginning for the A's, they have to like how this chapter of the season started.
The A's opened a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers with a 5-3 victory in front of 13,861 at Network Associates Coliseum. In the process, they kept pace with the leaders in the American League West and wild-card races.
The A's are still five games behind Seattle in the AL West and three games in back of Anaheim in the wild-card chase. The A's did gain a game on Boston, which is one game behind the Angels.
