Lindsay Davenport needed a third set and a bit of mettle to beat tour veteran Chandra Rubin, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, in a third-round match at the Acura Classic.
"I felt if I didn't do anything with my shots, she would hit winners," said Davenport, who plays Ai Sugiyama in Friday's quarterfinals. "I know she's a good player. I had to concentrate to hold serve, but once I got that double break (in the third), I could relax."
