CASTLE ROCK, Colo. _ Steve Pate reached outside the door for the newspaper at 7:30 Thursday morning, 30 minutes after The International officially began.
"It was cold and windy," Pate said later. "I was glad I wasn't playing in the morning."
Pate, the 41-year-old PGA Tour veteran with just one victory in the past 10 years, took advantage of an afternoon tee time and strangely "perfect conditions" to take the first-round lead at The International.
Buoyed by an eagle at the par-5 first hole, Pate scored 11 points to take a one-point lead over fellow late-starters Rich Beem and Billy Mayfair. Five others, including four who played in the afternoon, are two points back.
