SMITHFIELD, R.I. _ The Patriots were in the middle of eight-on-eight drills during practice on Thursday afternoon at Bryant College's Bulldog Stadium. As the defense set up in coverage, it was impossible not to notice the three guys in the middle of the field.
Lawyer Milloy, the All-Pro safety and team captain, was patrolling his area as usual, occasionally whacking one of the receivers. Tebucky Jones, the former first-round draft choice who has found a home at strong safety, appeared to be in midseason form, too.
And the third guy, number 27 in the program, also looked good. He fit right in with Milloy and Jones. He looked smooth and accomplished and ready to help.
