OSAKA, Japan _ Quarterback Jeff Garcia and most of the 49ers' other regulars won't play beyond the first quarter of the exhibition opener Saturday against the Washington Redskins. But Coach Steve Mariucci said Thursday that there could be several instances where a starter plays longer, most notably Dave Fiore and Matt Willig.
Fiore has moved from left guard to center to fill in for the injured Jeremy Newberry, who did not make the trip, and Mariucci wants to make sure Fiore and backup quarterback Tim Rattay get a chance to work together in game conditions.
