PHILADELPHIA _ Robert Person's season of misery officially ended on Thursday when Los Angeles-based surgeon Lewis Yocum determined that the Phillies' righthander needs surgery to repair a small tear in his right shoulder.
That surgery will be performed by Yocum on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Person, 32, opened the season as the Phillies' staff ace after winning a team-high 15 games in 2001, but he struggled out of the gate, going 0-3 with a 5.45 ERA in six April starts, which helped contribute to the team's awful start.
