HOOVER, Ala._Mississippi State's Jackie Sherrill caught a quick glance at the preseason All-Southeastern Conference team, along with the projected order of finish, and flashed a calculated grin.

Some 82 voters at SEC Media Days picked State as an overwhelming choice to finish dead last in the SEC West, a 180-degree turn from last year, when the Bulldogs and LSU appeared to be at the top of the heap.

The Tigers got there, and eventually won the SEC championship, their first outright title since 1986. The Bullies got bullied around and finished 3-8, including an embarrassing 21-9 loss to Division I-A newcomer Troy State.

Sherrill seemed pleased the tables have been turned.

"Every time we've been picked high, we've finished low," Sherrill said, "and it seems every time we've been picked low, we've finished high."

Sherrill became the SEC's dean of coaches when Steve Spurrier left the Florida Gators to take command of the NFL's Washington Redskins, and he's entering his 12th season at Mississippi State.

A season that has plenty of ominous signs, none more than NCAA investigators who have been interviewing State athletes on the MSU campus this week.
