Through the beautifully photographed pages of coffee-table books, it is possible to travel the world and never apply for a passport, pack a bag, suffer jet lag or nurse swollen ankles. Never even leave the sofa, in fact. And as with any conventional trip, armchair travelers needn't necessarily pay full price. Here are some great journeys you can take without so much as vacating your living room _ all can be ordered over the Internet _ and at discounted "fares."
_"The Southwest Inside Out" (Wild Horizons Publishing) (jacket price $24.95; Amazon.com $17.47)
It's common to think of exotic destinations as being far beyond America. Thomas Wiewandt's 315 striking color photos in this thick-paged paperback are a resounding reminder that the Southwestern United States holds a unique place in the world. Here are glowing images of arches, dunes, rock formations, cliff dwellings, minerals, plants, animals and the weather. The photographer even gives tips on how you can take better pictures of the region yourself. More than 30 illustrations explain the geographic forces that created the terrain. Among the maps is a 15-by-20-inch pull-out of the Southwestern U.S. (ISBN 1-879728-03-6)
_"Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa" (National Geographic) (jacket price $40; Amazon.com $28)
This text-heavy hardcover was created as the companion book to the giant-screen film by the same name. It's natural to expect to see more of National Geographic's famed photography and illustrations in a National Geographic book than what is included here. Instead, the lion's share of the space on its 272 slick pages tell the story, actually an expanded diary with lots of historical background, of a group of trekkers and the guide who leads them to the top of Africa's most famous mountain. Author Audry Salkeld was one of the trekkers. Additional story insets from various authorities of Africa flesh out the text. (ISBN 0-7922-6466-5)
_"Great Barrier Reef" (National Geographic Insight) (jacket price $40; Amazon.com $28)
