The hamburger is the classic all-American Fourth of July food. So I spent time in my market's frozen-food section to discover what's available in vegetarian offerings. I also want to tell you about my favorite condiments that can make or break this summery vegetarian offering.
Most burgers are made from soy or soy-and-grain combinations. Several are organic and others claim to be made from non-GMO ingredients ("no genetically modified" foods). Most come four to a box and cost about $1 a burger.
Another popular "meatless meat" offering is vegetable-based "chicken" cutlets or burgers. They have names such as Chik'n or Chickenless. They are quite good and taste like chicken. All of these selections can be found in frozen-food sections of natural food markets and regular supermarkets.
A plus for these products is that when grilled, they don't form the carcinogenic compounds that meats do when cooked over open heat.
Garden Burger: This company makes several flavors of grain- and soy-based burgers. You can choose flavors such as Vegan, Vegetable Medley, Sante Fe and Flame Grilled.
Natural Touch, Morningstar Farms: These burgers are made from soy, grains and beans. They come in flavor varieties such as Original, Tex Mex, Vegan and Vegetable Medley.
Amy's: This producer makes a soy-based burger in Chicago flavor and Texas Style as well as the others.
