OWINGS MILLS, Md. _ Don Pooley lined up perhaps the most important putt of his professional golf career, then backed off, causing the huge crowd that ringed the 18th green at Caves Valley Golf Club to exhale and almost touch off a small hurricane.
Facing the challenge of Hall of Famer Tom Watson, Pooley backed off several shots Sunday in the U.S. Senior Open during a final round that was as nerve-racking as it was long. After 18 holes, Pooley and Watson needed to play five more to settle the issue.
