MIAMI _ Amazing and amusing, isn't it, how eager the fans of any driver other than Jeff Gordon are to conclude that the four-time Winston Cup champion's career is in some divorce-induced freefall.
Daytona's Pepsi 400 under the lights Saturday night represents the figurative midpoint of the season, and Gordon does arrive without a victory.
Indeed, his drought dates to the Kansas Speedway inaugural on Sept. 30. This season was seven races old before Gordon even could bandage his wounds with a top-five finish.
And should Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip extend the DEI team's recent dominance of NASCAR's two restrictor-plate superspeedways with a repeat of their 1-2 Pepsi 400 finish a year ago, Gordon's streak of futility will reach 25 races after Daytona's...
