SALMON SNOUTS
"Lost at sea," about the declining population of Atlantic salmon, states that the fish navigate toward their birth stream partly by using "olfactory sensors on the lateral line down their sides." In fact, the lateral line is a fluid-filled canal that functions as a second "inner ear," sensing low-frequency sound waves and vibrations. A salmon's olfactory organs are on the snout.
