Despite lack of publicity and playing on a second division team, Expos right fielder shines through with superstar talent
THE SHY GUY WEARING No. 27 HAS a Russian first name, speaks Spanish and, in a city of predominantly French Canadians, he's king of America's pastime.
Vladimir Guerrero, the uniquely skilled right fielder for the Montreal Expos, continues to gain a reputation for his all-world talents.
Yet, to the general populace, he remains baseball's least-known super star despite earning his second consecutive berth on the National League All. Star team in 2000 along with his back-to-back 40-homer seasons.
"If he played for the Yankees or the Braves, he'd be like (Ken) Griffey (Jr.)," former teammate Rondell White said. "He fits into that class anyway. But it would be scary if everybody saw what we've see him do every day."
Guerrero, a native of Nizao Bani, Dominican Republic, hit .345 last season with 44 homers, 123 RBI, 197 hits, 379 total bases and a .664 slugging percentage.
The 6-3, 205-pound prodigy picked up where he left off after establishing seven club offensive records in 1999 while finishing in the league's top 10 in 11 categories.
