AFTER HITTING A CAREER HIGH .334 WITH 33 HOME RUNS AND 125 RBI IN 2000, SAN FRANCISCO SECOND baseman Jeff Kent garnered 22 out of a possible 32 first-place votes to run away with his first Most Valuable Player Award.
Kent beat out teammate Barry Bonds, who finished second, for the honor, and became the eighth second baseman since 1931 to win the award, joining Frankie
Frisch (1931), Charlie Gehringer (1937), Joe Gordon (1942), Jackie Robinson (1949), Nellie Fox (1959), Joe Morgan (1975-1976) and Ryne Sandberg (1984).
"This puts me more in a category along side of guys like that," Kent said after winning the award, "It is truly an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as those guys. I never try to compare myself with anybody.
"I'm floored that people across the country recognized the Giants and more specifically recognized me," Kent said. "I was going against tremendous, quality talent in Barry Bonds, Todd Helton, Jim Edmonds and Mike Piazza."
Kent became the fifth Giants player to win the N.L. MVP since the club moved to San Francisco in 1958 and the seventh overall in the franchise's history. Giants who won Most Valuable Player honors in New York are Frisch (1931), Carl Hubbell (1933, 1936) and Willie Mays (1954). Award winners in San Francisco are Mays (1965), Willie McCovey (1969), Kevin Mitchell (1989), Barry Bonds (1993) and Kent.
