DURING THE 1978 SEASON, DAVE WINFIELD WAS becoming a dominant presence in the National League as one of its most promising stars when he hit .308 with 24 homers, 97 RBI and 181 hits.
At 26, he was at the doorstep of his expected potential as an all-around performer.

The title was right on the mark as Winfield went on to have one of his finest seasons in 1979 by leading the National League in RBI (118) with 34 homers, a .308 batting average, 97 runs scored while capturing his first Gold Glove award.
Winfield played 22 seasons in the majors with the Padres (1973-1980), Yankees (1981-1990), Angels (1990-1991), Blue Jays (1992), Twins (1993-1994) and Indians (1995). He missed the 1989 season due to a back injury.
Winfield is one of only four players (Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, George Brett) to record 3,000 hits, 200 stolen bases and over 300 home runs in his career. In the 22 years he played in the majors, he hit .300 four times, collected 465 homers, 540 doubles, 1,669 runs and ranks 12th all-time with 1,833 RBI.
