With today's complex law practice, many law librarians are asked to find local laws from distant parts of the country. Once upon a time, lawyers were well versed in the language of their local tax laws or pet ordinances. Today they are still knowledgeable, however, sometimes they are also asked about the provisions of ordinances in far-off cities.
Municipal law from other regions has always been difficult to locate. Local libraries seldom, if ever, retain the codes of even neighboring communities. Local laws have never been included on LexisNexis, Westlaw, or the smaller legal aggregators, presumably because the costs to post them are high and potential usage is relatively low.
Many of us try a combination of approaches to retrieve this material-ranging from contacting our librarian colleagues in other cities to playing "phone tag" with bureaucrats in city agencies.
