Field proven concepts and equipment are at the heart of Girassol's deepwater production system. But the project could not have happened without new technology and innovative approaches to project management and design.
Completing wells in unconsolidated shallow sands, installing production equipment on the seafloor, and building the largest FPSO yet are significant challenges by themselves.
Doing it all in 4,593ft (1,400m) of water in a way that makes the project economically attractive and protects the ocean environment takes each of these impressive achievements to another level.
But perhaps one of the biggest achievements of Girassol to date is the success of its project management.
Combining a fast-track schedule, application of new technology and five major work sites spread around the globe demands skilled management. Add personnel that together speak a couple dozen languages and represent a broad spectrum of cultures and the challenge is magnified. Then getting everyone working toward the same goal--and maintaining that focus--is a daunting chore.
Oh, yes. And throw in a merger involving the company managing the project after it is well under way. Fortunately, the merged companies both were already partners in the project and there was no reason to doubt the way the Girassol project was being conducted.
