ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. _ Leave it to Barry Zito to restore some sanity to the A's trip.
Zito, who has halted four losing streaks and during a 17-game stretch in early May accounted for the A's only three wins, took a shutout into the seventh inning and tied a career high with 11 strikeouts Saturday to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 8-3.
"He's been the most consistent starter we've had," Manager Art Howe said. "He showed it again tonight."
The A's have won seven of 10 and two in a row against Tampa Bay. But this was easily their best all-around effort since Zito (6-2) and two relievers shut out the Devil Rays last Sunday.
