DENVER _ Now, inevitably, will come a suggestion from someone that Patrick Roy is too old, too spent, with too little magic left in that glove and stick to live up to his considerable reputation.

Now comes a whisper or two that perhaps he should retire, to make way for another, younger goalie, to give someone else a chance to stop shots for the Colorado Avalanche.

Listen closely, and someone will utter the tired old excuse that Roy should leave now, before his game slips, while he can still look in the mirror and be proud of the way he played the game.

As Barry Melrose once said, "That's chicken." Chicken something, all right. Roy is fine right where he is. The Avs are fine as long as they're blessed to have him minding the nets.

Where is Roy right now? Here's hoping he's sitting on ...
