LONDON _ Queen Elizabeth II threw open the gates of Buckingham Palace on Saturday night, inviting some 12,000 people into her back yard for a classical music concert to celebrate her Golden Jubilee weekend.
Her 50th year on the throne was marked by that rarest of events in England _ a warm, bright sunny day. There were no clouds in the sky as the slightly awestruck crowd filed past the golden gates that usually separate them from the royal family.
They could hardly believe their luck as they walked into the palace _ past priceless paintings and tapestries _ and into the magnificent garden, complete with ornamental lakes, rare plants, a tennis court, and, on this occasion, a beer tent serving London Pride and Organic Honey Dew beer.
"I think it's absolutely fantastic," said Karen Sternbach, of Leeds. "I was surprised we got tickets, so many people applied. I'm just overwhelmed."
