CHICAGO _ So Bud Selig was right all along_baseball does have a competitive imbalance crisis.

But who knew the issue that would finally explode into a full-blown national debate would be the imbalance between players juicing up on steroids to gain an illegal competitive edge, and those who play clean and risk watching their numbers get dwarfed by artificially muscled peers?

Who knew? Well, actually, everyone knew, or at least suspected. When 17 players in history hit 50 or more home runs through 1990, and 17 more do it since 1990, something's definitely amiss.
