DOVER, Del. _ Matt Kenseth brushed aside questions about whether he gave everything he had to catch teammate Mark Martin over the final laps of the Coca-Cola 600 last Sunday.
"Anybody who's watched very many races should have been able to see I was trying pretty hard," Kenseth said. "I almost spun out a few times on the final laps.
"If I was trying to finish second and had almost a full straightaway lead over third, I sure wouldn't be in there sideways three-wide with lapped cars."
Martin won an extra $1million for his victory, a bonus for which Kenseth was not eligible. TV analysts Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds speculated that team etiquette dictated the Martin-Kenseth order of finish.
"I am out to win races. I'm out for the 17 car," Kenseth said. "No offense to Jack (Roush), but I didn't care whether he got that extra $1million to win that race or not. I was out there trying to win a race the same way Mark was."
Roush said there are no team orders when it comes to battling for wins, other than to respect each other.
