ARLINGTON, Texas _ One member of the Oakland Athletics, who wished to remain anonymous, said steroid use in baseball is so flagrant that on A's team charters some players "shoot up."
Stories of steroid abuse in baseball are popping up faster than major-league players are apparently popping performance-enhancing drugs.
"I've been playing for 20 years, and I know it's going on way more now than when I started," Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers said. "These people are saying, `Oh, it's because I work so hard in the off-season.' Please.
"If this keeps going on, the game is in deep, deep trouble. The game's integrity will be gone. The guys that played for 20 years who established all these records will be passed by average players, at best. It's all going to be wiped out."
When former third baseman Ken Caminiti, who played for the Rangers last season, told "Sports Illustrated" he used steroids, including during his 1996 MVP season, baseball and its clandestine relationship with steroids became not so secret.
Caminiti said the steroids improved his performance, and he doesn't regret taking them.
"I've made a ton of mistakes," he told "SI.'' "I don't think taking steroids is one of them."
