The other day while shopping at my good old natural products store, it occurred to me that broccoli is about as perfect as a vegetable can be--the golden child everybody just knows will grow up to be president of the United States. But getting a sprig of it from plate to palate is oftentimes daunting. Even though broccoli has a good head on its shoulders, it's plain-tasting at best. (No lesser a cruciferous foods authority than a man who did grow up to be President of the United States, George H. Bush, confirmed this observation some years ago when he said he preferred pork rinds.)
