COLUMBIA, S.C. _ Dorethea Marshall has had shoes on her mind since childhood.
Born with pigeon toes, she had to wear braces on her feet for several years. She still vividly remembers having to wear heavy, brogans with steel sides.
"I used to kick myself when I walked," she remembered in a recent interview. "That was until I discovered athletic shoes like PF Flyers and Converse All Stars. I could wear them and not kick myself. At that point I became extremely passionate about shoes because I didn't want to wear tennis shoes all my life.
"I swore to myself I was going to have my own shoe company."
Today, that promise has become a reality.
Marshall is president and co-founder of Canaan Inc., a women's shoe company she started with her husband, Robert, in 1996.
The company mission is to offer women comfortable shoes that look good.
