"Finding God in the Face of Evil," by Ed Dobson (Kregel Publications, 142 pages, $11.99).
After the Sept. 11 attacks, Dobson was one of many pastors who struggled to comfort their congregations. He said it was the most difficult assignment in his ministry.
Dobson, who leads a church in Grand Rapids, Mich., tried to avoid pat theological answers. He tried to reach people's hearts, not just their minds, as they grappled with such an enormous tragedy.
His sermons became the basis for this reassuring book. It doesn't offer airtight answers to life's everyday misfortunes, much less an event on the scale of Sept. 11. But Dobson helps Christians by reminding them that God is in ultimate control, despite appearances to the contrary. He cites a wide variety of Scriptures, drawing heavily on the Psalms, that discuss God's sovereignty.
This book can help readers take a step back from today's tragic events and gain a timeless perspective on life under God's plan.
"God holds the entire universe together, being involved in the affairs of history and the disasters that happen to all of us," Dobson writes. "God is never caught off guard by disaster, no matter how suddenly it occurs or how large and terrible its consequences." _ Ed Housewright
