Still Breathing, "September" _ 3 { stars

Still Breathing, a hard-core quartet from Tulsa, Okla., comes out strong with the release of "September." The band members have only been together for a little more than a year, but they sound like veterans.

The musical tightness is mostly due to the rhythm section of Michael Rame on bass and John Hensley on drums. They are complemented by guitarist Bob Hensley as he delivers some incredibly brutal riffs.

Lead vocalist Dacey produces intense vocals for almost the entire album _ and they're a much higher quality than those of most hard-core bands.

The band's sound has been described as having "hard-core elements of Turmoil and Vision of Disorder, the moody atmospherics of the Deftones and the precision of Sepultura, Meshuggah and label mates Living Sacrifice, while retaining an identity that is remarkably unique."

Highlights of the album are "Sweet Wound Sour," "Only Thi" and a cover of "Threatened," which was originally performed by Living Sacrifice.

"Sweet Wound Sour" seems to be the epitome of what Still Breathing does best: intense music that is made more enjoyable by Dacey's emotion-filled vocals.
